Legendary Canadian MMA fighter Georges St-Pierre is returning to the Octagon for the first time in six years, and he's got Nick Diaz on his list of possible opponents.
The 42-year-old from Saint-Isidore, Que., joined JD Bunkis on his podcast Friday to discuss his upcoming grappling tournament and who he wants to take on in his first fight back.
“No, it's not Damien Maya," he said. "That was a rumour. They used to really like Diaz. They say Nick Diaz was their No. 1 choice.
“It's not official yet. It's not signed. I'm there, you know, to promote the event. If it's what the fan wants, the UFC wants, makes everybody happy, let's do it."
St-Pierre, who announced his retirement in 2019, is set to compete in the UFC Fight Pass Invitational on Dec. 14.
The longest-reigning UFC champion is hoping his appearance will promote the organization and raise awareness for the sport.
“So, I'm in great shape. I love to compete, you know, especially when the risks are to a minimum. And I'm happy to also help promote the sport,” he told Bunkis.
“I'm not coming back to be world champion in grappling. That's not my goal here. The goal is to make a sport where we can add attendance, maybe fill out a big arena, maybe a stadium at one point. But we need to start, you know, smaller.”
