The young son of combat sports superstar Francis Ngannou has died.
An initial report from Cameroonian outlet 237online was confirmed Monday by Sportsnet’s Aaron Bronsteter.
The details surrounding the cause of death are unknown at this time.
“What's the purpose of life if what we're fighting tooth and nail to get away from is what finally hit us the hardest!?” the former UFC heavyweight champion posted to social media Monday afternoon. “Why is life so unfair and merciless? Why does life always take what we don't have? I'm (expletive) tired.”
Hours later, Ngannou released a heartbreaking statement.
Ngannou’s manager Marquel Martin wrote: “Please respect Francis Ngannou and his family during this traumatic time. I along with millions others will be praying for their strength.”
As news of the tragedy began circulating, condolences began pouring in.
“I am so sorry to hear of your loss Francis, my prayers are with you and your family at this time,” Conor McGregor wrote.
Ngannou, 37, became a star in mixed martial arts and eventually the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion. He left the UFC in 2023 as reigning champion when he signed with the PFL and simultaneously began preparing for his pro boxing debut. He is coming off back-to-back blockbuster matchups with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.
The Cameroon-born Frenchman is regarded as one of the most humble and respected figures in all of combat sports.
