Whichever NHL team ends up picking first in 2026 seems likely to have quite a reward waiting for it on draft day.
Presumed 2026 No. 1 pick Gavin McKenna crossed the 100-point mark on Friday night while playing with the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers, slipping a pass to Oasiz Wiesblatt in front of the net in the second period against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
McKenna brought his totals to 30 goals and 70 assists in the contest — only his 49th game of the year — to become just the third player in the CHL to reach 100 points this season.
The 17-year-old from Whitehorse is in his third season with Medicine Hat, having registered 18 points over 16 games in 2022-23 and 97 points in 61 games last season.
Per Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects, McKenna is just the third WHLer in the last 35 years to record 100 points in 49 games or less. Robinson also pointed out that 2023 No. 1 picked Connor Bedard needed 62 games to cross the century mark in his pre-draft season, further cementing how impressive McKenna has been on the ice in 2024-25.
The six-foot, 165-pound forward trails only 2023 Washington Capitals second-round Andrew Cristall in WHL scoring and is third in plus/minus with a plus-43 rating.
Not only has McKenna been filling up the scoresheet this year for the Tigers, but he's been helping his club to the top of the WHL standings.
Medicine Hat entered play Friday with a 37-16-4 record, good for the top mark in the Eastern Conference and the second-highest point total in the league.
Despite his regular-season success, McKenna did struggle on Team Canada at this year's world juniors. He managed just one goal in five games as the Canadians were bounced by Czechia in the tournament quarterfinal and were often left searching for offence.
