Hammon has interest in making the move to the WNBA, Jennings and Charania write.
A former star player with both franchises (she played with the Aces when the team was based in San Antonio), Hammon has been on Spurs coach Gregg Popovich’s staff since 2014.
Last off-season, Hammon interviewed for head-coaching roles with the Orlando Magic and Portland Trail Blazers. She also interviewed for the Milwaukee Bucks’ head coaching job in 2018, becoming the first woman to get an interview for an NBA head coaching role.
Hammon was acting head coach for the Spurs during a game against the Los Angeles Lakers in December 2020 after Popovich was ejected.
The Liberty job is vacant, while Bill Laimbeer is the Aces coach, but would move to a new role in the organization if Hammon is hired, The Athletic reports.
