France may have lost yet another key player for the World Cup. Karim Benzema, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2022 as the best footballer in the world, has reportedly suffered a thigh injury in training ahead of his nation's World Cup-opening match against Australia on Tuesday.
According to a report by ESPN, Benzema, 34, suffered the injury in Doha during a session on Saturday night.
Benzema, a striker, has six goals in 12 league this season for Spanish club Real Madrid. He has 37 goals in 97 appearances for France, dating back to 2007, but did not play for his country between 2015 and 2021 after being implicated in, and eventually found guilty of, a conspiracy to blackmail former teammate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape.
