Canada will go for gold without a key forward in the lineup at the 2022 World Juniors.
Head coach Dave Cameron confirmed Friday that centre Ridly Greig will miss Saturday's gold-medal game with an injury.
Greig was injured in the first period of Wednesday's quarterfinal game against Switzerland and was not in the lineup for Friday's 5-2 win over Czechia.
Before the injury, Greig was one of Canada's most impactful forwards, scoring three goals and six points in five games while making his presence felt in all areas of the game.
“He’s unreal,” teammate Tyson Foerster said of Greig earlier in the tournament. “His work ethic is insane. His heart. He blocks shots, backchecks, scores goals. He does it all.”
Greig, 20, was a first-round pick of the Ottawa Senators in 2020.
Canada will play the winner of the second semifinal game between Sweden and Finland for gold on Saturday.
