Team Canada captain Kirby Dach out for remainder of World Juniors

Jr hockey insider Sam Cosentino discusses what Canada is losing with the deletion of their captain Kirby Dach, and who might step into his role on the ice, and suggest who might be best to take over the captaincy.

Team Canada captain Kirby Dach has suffered a wrist injury and will be sidelined for the remainder of the World Juniors, Sportsnet’s Sam Cosentino can confirm.

According to the Chicago Blackhawks, Dach’s NHL team, he will be returning to Chicago for for further evaluation.

Dach suffered the injury during the third period of Canada’s 1-0 win over Russia on Wednesday night. After landing a hit on Ilya Safonov, Dach grabbed his right arm in apparent discomfort. He skated to the dressing room and did not return.

Andre Tourigny, Canada’s head coach, said after that game that Dach would undergo x-rays.

Dach, a third-overall pick by the Blackhawks in the 2019 NHL Draft, has eight goals and 15 assists in 64 games last season.

Under tournament rules, Canada is not allowed to fill Dach’s spot on the roster with a substitute as they have already entered the Edmonton bubble.

Canada opens its tournament on Dec. 26 against Germany.
