The defending champion United States will take on Czechia in the semifinals of the world junior hockey championship in Ottawa.
The U.S. advanced with a 7-2 rout over Switzerland during Thursday's quarterfinals. Czechia eliminated host Canada for the second year in a row, this time by a heartbreaking score of 4-3 thanks to Adam Jecho's game-winning goal with 40 seconds remaining in the third period.
Teams were reseeded after the quarterfinal round. The Americans topped Pool A in the preliminary round with 10 points, earning three regulation wins and an overtime loss.
Meanwhile, Sweden fended off Latvia 3-2 and Finland edged Slovakia 5-3 to reach the other semifinal matchup.
Sweden, who finished first in Pool B undefeated at 4-0, is seeking its first gold medal at the world juniors since 2012.
Both semifinals are scheduled for Saturday with the medal games slated for Sunday.
