Canada's Marina Stakusic wins Abierto Tampico event in Mexico

TAMPICO, MEXICO — Nineteen-year-old Marina Stakusic of Mississauga, Ont., won the Abierto Tampico tennis tournament in Tampico, Mexico on Saturday evening.

Stakusic defeated fifth-seeded Anna Blinkova of Russia, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to capture her first WTA 125 trophy, a second-tier tournament on the women's professional circuit.

Currently ranked 140th in the world, Stakusic gained entry into the Abierto Tampico by winning a qualifying match, before going on a run that saw her eliminate the Nos. 6 and 7 seeds along the way.

The win comes after Stakusic defeated world No. 12 Jelena Ostapenko in September at the Guadalajara Open, and advanced to the quarterfinals.
