Marino upset No. 4 seed Lulu Sun of New Zealand 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 during the opening round Monday.
The 34-year-old from Vancouver won her first career WTA title in the final event of the 2024 season, prevailing at a WTA 125 tournament in Midland, Mich., in November.
Meanwhile, Marina Stakusic of Mississauga, Ont., was ousted in the second round of the Canberra International.
Australia's Taylah Preston bounced back to beat Stakusic 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
