Rebecca Marino recorded an impressive road victory to open her 2025 season.
The Vancouver player upset No. 4 seed Lulu Sun of New Zealand 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the opening round of the ASB Classic in Auckland.
Ranked 102nd in the world, Marino, 34, knocked out the world No. 40 in her home country.
Marino won her first career WTA title in the final event of the 2024 season, prevailing at a WTA 125 tournament in Midland, Mich., in November.
Sun, 23, reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2024 and was named WTA newcomer of the year earlier this month.
Marino next faces Bernarda Pera of the U.S.
